How Beauty Sleep affects your Skin

How Beauty Sleep Affects your Skin featured

It’s been a LONG while since I posted about some informative post over here.

So I thought of doing it this week!

We’ve always known beauty sleep to be important for our skin and our health on a whole.

But how much do you really know about how beauty sleep affects your skin?

Sleeping enough…

1. Makes you look happier and more vibrant.

Have you heard of people telling you, “Are you sick? Why do you look so sad/tired?”.

When in fact, you know it’s you not sleeping earlier the night before, or having ample rest.

Apparently, not having enough sleep makes the corners of your mouth droop!

Thus, making it seem like you’re a little sad which causes a misunderstanding.

We tend to furrow and frown even more than we do on a normal day, just because we don’t have good night’s rest.

Instead of being misunderstood, sleeping enough would definitely make you react more positively as well as help your day go better.

P.S. exercising regularly helps as well!

2. Keeps your skin looking young.

Do you know that your body actually boosts blood flow to your skin especially when you’re sleeping?

Having a good blood circulation can help your skin glow the next morning and even reduce the dark and puffy eye bags!

Dark eye circles form because your blood isn’t circulating well, which can collect under the eyes and since the skin under your eyes are so thin, it is much more visible.

However, discolouration under your eyes are also determined by your genes and many other factors.

Even if sleep isn’t your solution, you should still be getting enough rest along with a pillow elevating your head so it can reduce swelling under your eyes.

You can also keep those wrinkles at bay for longer too because your skin produces collagen when you sleep.

This prevents sagging and improves your skin’s ability to be plumper and more resilient.

Getting 5 hours of sleep a night actually can lead to twice as many fine lines as sleeping 7 would.

3. Makes your skincare products work for you.

I’m sure you’ve heard all about how “your skin repairs itself as you sleep”.

It isn’t said for nothing because it IS true.

In the morning and afternoon, your skin is working to fight off sun damage (with your help of applying sunscreen) and free radicals.

But in the night, it isn’t doing any of that and hence, people do masks, exfoliation and some extra pampering before they sleep because your skin will soak up all of that while you sleep.

If you aren’t drinking enough water before you sleep, it might also be the cause of your skin feeling too dry or oily when you wake up.

We all know hydration is important. Be it through products, or directly consuming water.

As we sleep, our skin actually loses more water than we do in the day. That is why we may look like a grease ball when we wake up.

Is that not the case for you? It is for me LOL.

With the help of water and your skincare products, your skin will thank you for it the next day.

You need it especially more if you sleep in an air-conditioned room!

4. Gives you healthier hair and scalp.

Before I move on to why, let me give you a tip on how to reduce the frizz on your hair!

I’m very prone to frizziness when I wake up and now that I have a permed hair, I decided to get a satin/silk pillowcase so that my hair stay as frizz-free as they can.

And they do work! Satin/silk pillowcase reduces skin tugging when you sleep as well, plus the extra sleep marks you get lol.

Anyway, do you realise when you’re busy and you skimp on your sleep, you start dropping a lot of hair?

That happens to me when I’m stressed about my examinations and I really do lol.

The lack of sleep causes the thinning of hair due to the rise in stress hormones so if you can, do try your best to sleep as much as you can even while you’re busy.

5. Reduces unnecessary breakouts and redness in your skin.

Do you know that the lack of sleep actually decreases the moisture levels and the pH levels of your skin?

This makes your skin look more dull and aged.

A reduction in your pH levels also causes your skin to look more dry, dehydrated and possibly increase redness.

The collagen that you lack from sleeping so little makes your skin unable to repair itself as much as they could.

Overtime, it may cause your skin to be more sensitive and textured (after many breakouts not healing well).

If you don’t do something to help your skin, it may never go back to the way it used to be.

All in all, it isn’t easy to get ample and sufficient rest due to the busy life we may lead.

Some of us can only get 5 hours, some of us up to 8 hours.

Nevertheless, when you feel that your skin is behaving crazily even though you’ve been pampering it with expensive (or affordable) skincare products.

It may just be the amount of sleep you are getting so try to incorporate a better sleep pattern.

For your skin and your health.
