Why I Stopped Going to the Dermatologist

Why I stopped going to the dermatologist

Hey! Decided to do this short Thoughtful Thursday post to let you guys know more about me!

This topic popped up of nowhere in my brain so I penned it down.

I’ll be talking about why I stopped going to the dermatologist – a pretty good but expensive one at that.

This post is not to say that going to the derm did not help me at all.

It gave me tremendous confidence when my skin got better. Everything changed for the better.

But one thing that made me stop was the exorbitant price tag of the accutane pills (S$4 per pill), clinic skincare products and that the consultation price after I turned 21 would increase.

As my skin condition got better, I started to think if I could live without visiting the dermatologist.

I didn’t want to be a prisoner who’s forever chained to those pills and products just to keep my face clear.

I began to sought after gentle and sensitive skincare products for my skin to substitute with the clinic skincare products that were gradually running out.

After about a year with the dermatologist, I felt that I could take care of it from there.

On my last appointment (self-proclaimed by me), I paid my final consultation fee and left without making a follow-up appointment.

However…

One year after I stopped, small pimples started coming back little by little.

Just when you thought confidence was building up lol.

I was working as a temporary contract staff at that point in time where I had to wear makeup from Monday to Friday, up to 12 hours at the time since I lived far away from my workplace.

Other than just work

I also drank alcohol on Friday nights before clubbing.

Sometimes, I’d grab some beer with my colleagues after work to relieve some stress.

Coupled with unhealthy eating habits, I started breaking out.

It became even worse after I met my boyfriend, which didn’t help as I piled on the makeup when I’m out with him.

(Even using concealer as my foundation when it became really bad – and was a bad choice)

You can read more details from the posts above where I mentioned how insecure I was.

Due to my temporary contract ending soon after, I started to wear less makeup as I didn’t go out every day.

My face was still pretty bad (though not as bad as before taking Accutane).

After awhile, my skin calmed down and I started to let down my guard around my boyfriend.

Even revealing my bare face to him. I wore less makeup and even switched to a loose powder foundation.

Before, I was using Laneige’s Cushion Foundation.

I realised I could actually do it without the help of a dermatologist. Although it isn’t as baby butt smooth as before, I was on the road to making it happen.

From then on, I began to read reviews thoroughly to know whether it suits my skin before purchasing it.

I’d read up to 10 reviews for a product because I wanted to make sure I was fine using it.

Friends also started asking me for recommendations because they knew I read a lot on products haha.

Btw, I have a product review just up the week before and if you have acne scars or some post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, I highly recommend you to try this!

Have got some before and after photos for you to see how it worked on my skin.

  1. Ah you live in Singapore! That’s so interesting. I have never been. Great to hear that you have been managing your skin without having to pay out so regularly. We are all so different but it is great to hear the experience of others. Of course, products can affect our skin but others see improvements with age too. Really hope that you are set now and can feel confident in yourself within your own skin regimen.

    1. Yes I do! 🙂 yeah I totally agree. Time and age affects our skin too, there are still imperfections but no one is really perfect, are they? ????

Thank you, I’m definitely feeling more confident compared to before!
